Paragon Standard Remodeling Series
Don't hire a contractor who guesses. Hire the expert who literally wrote the book on proper installation methodology. Antonio Topete Diaz documented the exact failure patterns behind leaking showers, failed shower pans, and faulty waterproofing — and built a company that holds every project to that published standard. Whether it's a $16k tub conversion or a $60k kitchen, the standard doesn't change.

Then the tile cracks. The grout fails. Water gets behind the wall. It doesn't matter if you spent $16,000 or $60,000 — if the structure underneath wasn't built correctly, it fails. We don't take on every project, but every project we do take on gets built the same way.
Every project — a $16k tub conversion or a $60k kitchen — starts with what's behind the wall. Waterproofing, framing, blocking, plumbing, and electrical done right before we touch a single finish.
The space has to work for how you actually live. We plan around your habits and your daily routine — whether that's a safer shower for aging in place or a kitchen that finally flows.
When the structure is right and the function is dialed in, the finishes are the easy part. And because the foundation holds, they stay beautiful for decades — not seasons.
Understanding the Problem
In the Central Valley, homes deal with hard water, temperature swings, and aging plumbing infrastructure that accelerates the timeline on bathroom problems. The damage is usually well underway before anything visible appears.
01
A waterproofing membrane applied without proper overlap, pre-sloped mortar, or sealed penetrations isn't a system — it's a delay. Water moves through grout, around drains, and behind fixtures continuously. The question is only where it ends up.
02
Tile adhered to standard drywall, improperly gapped backer board, or an unsupported mortar bed will crack and delaminate. No amount of regrouting addresses the underlying movement. The substrate has to be right before the first tile goes down.
03
Drains, supply lines, niches, and fixture backing are each a gap in the waterproofing envelope. When they're not sealed as part of the system, water finds them — and follows the path of least resistance into the framing and subfloor.
04
A shower floor with insufficient slope holds water after every use. Chronic standing water breaks down grout, saturates the substrate, and creates conditions for mold growth inside the wall cavity — none of which is visible from the outside.
05
Grab bar blocking not installed in the framing. Subfloor not assessed before new tile adds weight. Tub deck not properly supported. These aren't finish problems — they're structural decisions that determine whether the bathroom holds up for five years or twenty-five.
06
Recaulking over active moisture. Replacing surface tile without addressing what's underneath. These are not repairs — they're postponements. And the longer the underlying problem continues, the more expensive the eventual correct repair becomes.
Every project starts with an honest assessment of what's actually there — not just what's visible. We look at the full picture before we commit to a scope.

"We'd had a bathroom remodeled years ago by someone else. Within two years the tile was cracking and water had gotten behind the walls. ParagonCA tore it out, showed us exactly what had been done wrong, and rebuilt it correctly. That was four years ago — not a single issue since."

Master Bathroom Rebuild
"After a water damage claim, my insurance contractor did a patch job. ParagonCA came in, found the real source of the problem, and fixed it properly. They documented everything, worked with my adjuster, and the result was better than the original kitchen. I cannot say enough."

Kitchen — Water Damage Reconstruction
"We interviewed four contractors. ParagonCA was the only one who talked about what was behind the walls before talking about tile and countertops. That told us everything we needed to know. The project came in on time, on budget, and built to last."

We find the source — not just the symptom. Whether it's a shower that's been leaking into the subfloor for two years, tile that was set on the wrong substrate, or a waterproofing system that was never installed correctly — we open it up, document what we find, and rebuild it to the standard it should have been built to the first time. No patches. No cover-ups. No band-aids over a systemic failure.
How We Work
We listen first. We ask about how you use the space, what's failing, and what you need it to do — before we ever talk about finishes.
We assess what's behind the walls before we commit to a scope. No surprises mid-project. No change orders for things we should have caught.
Structure first. Every installation exceeds code — waterproofing, framing, plumbing, electrical. Finishes are applied to a foundation that will hold.
We walk every inch with you. We don't consider a project closed until you've inspected it yourself and signed off on every detail.
Free — No Obligation — No Sales Pressure

About ParagonCA
Most remodeling failures aren't visible on the surface — they're in the waterproofing membrane that was skipped, the substrate that wasn't prepared, the drain assembly that was never sealed correctly. Antonio Topete Diaz spent years investigating exactly these failures before founding ParagonCA. He documented what he found in the Paragon Standard Remodeling Series — published guides on why tile showers leak, why shower pans fail, and what correct installation actually looks like.
Every ParagonCA project starts with a structural assessment — before scope, before budget, before a single tile is selected. We identify what's there, document what needs to change, and build the system correctly from the substrate out. Finishes come last, not first.

The Published Standard
Antonio Topete Diaz is the author of the Paragon Standard Remodeling Series — published guides documenting the exact failure patterns he's investigated in the field and the correct methods for fixing them. These aren't marketing materials. They are the standard every ParagonCA project is built to.
If your tile shower is leaking, your shower pan is failing, or you're about to remodel and want to know what questions to ask — these books were written for you. The same knowledge that goes into every project is documented here, in plain language.

Gilda had her bathroom remodeled ten years ago — but her jacuzzi tub had been leaking ever since. We found the source of the leak, and discovered live electrical wires in an uncovered junction box hidden directly under the insulation. We fixed both hazards, then updated the entire bathroom to the design she had always wanted. This is what it means to work with someone who looks at the whole picture, not just the surface.
Modesto, CA
Behind the walls we found a leaking gas line, a live 220V wire shoved under the subfloor, and a water-damaged subfloor that had been hidden for years. We rebuilt everything to the Paragon Standard — then finished with beautiful custom details per the customer's specifications. This is why licensed matters.

Six contractors and plumbers guessed, cut, and failed to fix this homeowner's leak permanently. We told her the only real solution was to find the exact source — which meant gutting the bathroom entirely. We found a burst copper pipe under the foundation, then a second burst pipe in the adjacent bathroom. After rebuilding drain lines, water lines, framing, and waterproofing from the ground up, we finished with the design she had always dreamed of.

A second walkthrough of Rosa's complete bathroom rebuild. Two burst copper pipes under the foundation, structural framing damage, failed drain lines — all rebuilt from the ground up before a single finish tile was set. The cosmetic result you see here is built on a foundation that will last.

A senior customer was struggling to get in and out of his tub-shower combo safely. We recommended a curbless zero-threshold shower — he chose to keep a step with grab bars instead. We respected his decision, installed the grab bars with proper structural blocking, and built the walk-in shower exactly the way he wanted it. Accessibility remodeling means listening to the customer, not just following a checklist.

A returning customer was done with her backyard of grass, weeds, and uneven concrete. We removed the sod, ran underground electrical conduit and plumbing for a custom-built waterfall with an automatic timer, installed a French drain system, poured a new sloped concrete slab with multiple drains, and laid travertine pavers throughout. Custom planters with small trees frame the waterfall. A serious investment. Worth every penny.
Tracy, CA
This customer called about a leak in his tub. Our forensic inspection found the root cause — the wall waterproofing had completely failed. He decided to redo the entire bathroom: tub-shower converted to a walk-in shower with a seat, new flooring, single vanity upgraded to a dual-sink vanity, new lighting, hardware, and finishes throughout. The result is a beautiful modern classic bathroom built correctly from the inside out.
